In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Scully Tyrrell And Company take account of a worker’s genuine grievance over her dismissal. The worker, an audio-typist on a temporary contract, said she had not been told she was replacing a secretary on maternity leave and had been praised for her work. Scully Tyrrell And Company said it had made no promise of permanent employment and gave her a month’s notice that her contract would not be extended. The Court accepted that the company had acted within the strict terms of the contract. It also found that the worker had a genuine grievance because two new employees were taken on while she was working out her notice, without an adequate explanation for her termination. The recommendation was dated 25 March 1991.
