In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Manufacturing Science Finance accept Irish Sugar P.L.C.'s proposed amendments to its Special Allowance System, designed to compensate technical, sales and certain computer-scale staff for exceptional hours. The union had sought a higher pensionable minimum allowance and payment at appropriate rates for hours above 350 a year. The Court found that the union's case for those changes had not been substantiated. It also recommended discussions on possible adjustments arising from reduced working hours for hourly paid staff.
