In 1991, the Labour Court recommended a return to normal working and an early hearing on a pay-parity dispute involving 31 craft supervisors at Aer Rianta. Its recommendation was signed on 22 July 1991. The Aer Rianta Craft Unions said pay adjustments made for Aer Lingus supervisors in 1989 should also apply under a 1967 agreement. Aer Rianta rejected the claim, arguing that the agreement did not provide for salary parity and that the companies negotiated separately. The Court recommended eliminating the pay-rate discrepancy immediately on a personal basis, then holding an early Labour Court hearing on parity. If that hearing favoured the unions, supervisors’ pay would be set in line with parity; if it favoured the company, the parties should discuss a self-financing arrangement. The Court said the agreement’s dispute procedures should have been used before industrial action.
