In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Dublin University Press International Ltd restore the Irish Print Union’s organisational rights and apply the printing industry agreement. It also recommended binding arbitration for unresolved disputes for two years. The recommendation was signed on 1 July 1991. The Irish Print Union said the new company had reduced the workforce selectively and sought recognition and protection for its members. Dublin University Press International Ltd cited past industrial-relations difficulties and said its finances would not allow it to re-employ all former workers. The Court recommended cooperation over future vacancies and said the positions of two non-union staff should not be affected.
