Labour Court recommends Saturday work choice and age-based payments at Value Centre

By Aoife Loughran

Labour Court ·

In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that staff at Value Centre Cash & Carry could choose whether to work Saturdays, with any staffing shortfall covered by part-time staff. The recommendation was signed on 19 July 1991. The Irish Distributive and Administrative Trade Union opposed Saturday trading and staggered lunch breaks. The Court recommended additional Saturday payments on an age-related scale, from £2 for 16-year-olds to £12 for staff aged 21 and older, and did not recommend conceding the union’s other Saturday-working claims. It also recommended that the union accept staggered lunch breaks from 12.15pm to 2.30pm, with the company paying each staff member £300 compensation.
