Labour Court rejects union claim for wages lost during unofficial action at Harp

By Aoife Loughran

Labour Court ·

In 1992, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union’s claim for lost wages from unofficial industrial action at Harp Ireland Limited. The recommendation was signed on 5 October 1992. The union sought payment for workers who stopped work after a dispute over wages withheld from a shop steward. Harp Ireland Limited argued that the action was unofficial and that paying participants would create difficulties for future industrial relations. The Court considered that the company had not acted unreasonably and that the wages claimed were not justified. It did not recommend conceding the union’s claim.
