In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that the Mater Public Hospital grant nurses two additional days’ leave in each of two years as interim compensation connected with new technology. The recommendation was signed on 4 November 1992.
The Irish Nurses Organisation had sought compensation for about 700 nurses’ ongoing cooperation with new technology, with two days’ leave for two calendar years as the main element. The hospital opposed the claim, citing its different circumstances and financial position. The Court noted that the parties agreed there were no direct cash savings attributable to the technology. It recommended the leave as an interim measure, subject to review in light of national negotiations or at the end of two years.
