In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Murphy And Gunn Limited put its proposed reorganisation to the test before deciding whether to make a van driver in its Rathgar parts department redundant. The worker had 20 years’ service. The Court said the company had not established a credible case for redundancy at that time and recommended alternative duties for the worker, with the position reviewed at year end. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had argued that sufficient work remained; the company cited a decline in parts business. The recommendation was signed on 16 March 1993.
