Labour Court rejects joinery workers’ construction supplement claim

By Fionn Kelly

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Union of Construciton Allied Trades and Technicians’ claim for Construction Industry supplements at Waterford Joinery Limited. The recommendation was signed on 30 June 1993. The union argued that joinery workers were covered by the construction industry agreement and that construction wages had long been used as the comparator for joinery pay. Waterford Joinery said the agreement did not cover workshop employees, it could not afford the supplement and cheaper imports were eroding the market. The Court found the programme memorandum did not contemplate including the workers in the dispute.
