The Labour Court recommended that White Brothers Joinery Limited concede the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians’ claim for further phases of Construction Industry supplements. The recommendation was signed on 30 June 1993. White Brothers had paid a first-phase supplement of £17.50 from September 1991. The union said joiners and woodworking machinists were covered by the construction agreement and that construction rates had been used in pay negotiations. The company cited financial difficulties, competition from cheaper PVC windows and weak trading in the building industry. The Court found merit in the union’s claim and recommended that both sides negotiate how and when the balance would be paid.
