The Labour Court recommended introducing a 39-hour week for five signalmen at Connolly Station by reducing working time by one hour on Fridays and Saturdays, as Irish Rail proposed. The recommendation was signed on 2 September 1993. The National Bus and Rail Union had sought a 10-minute daily reduction on each shift without reducing staffing. The Court said that approach was unsuitable because it could leave current working arrangements in place with overtime instead of time off. It relied on Irish Rail’s assurance that the recommended change would not compromise safety.
