Labour Court rejects discrimination claim over Radio Telefis Eireann sound-operator posts

By Niamh Kearney

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court found that workers had not been discriminated against in appointments to overscale sound-operator posts at Radio Telefis Eireann, while recommending that staff be told how future vacancies would be filled. The recommendation was signed on 22 July 1994.

A worker representing colleagues said selection methods had varied and that sound-operators doing the same work were paid differently. The worker also raised potential discrimination based on sex or marital status. Radio Telefis Eireann said overscale payments reflected additional duties and responsibilities under an agreement with the recognised union.

The Court found that the overscale payments related to additional duties and responsibilities. It found no evidence that the different appointment methods were discriminatory and did not recommend concession of the claim. For transparency, it recommended that Radio Telefis Eireann inform staff through normal procedures how future vacancies would be filled.
