In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Wilkes Cerdac Limited maintain its quarterly stock-check payment arrangement until March 1995, then pay £132 three times and £66 per quarter thereafter. The recommendation was signed on 14 November 1994. The company said computerisation and reduced stock meant only three workers were needed for the quarterly check, down from 10. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that the long-standing payment was a guaranteed part of the affected workers' wages and should continue.
