In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Allegro’s proposals for cost reductions and new work practices be accepted with amendments, including £500 to each employee on account and an 18-month formula for compensation for loss of earnings. The recommendation was dated 6 October 1997. The dispute with Marine, Port And General Workers' Union concerned changes to a draft operating staff agreement, including annualised hours, shift work and flexibility. Allegro said the changes were needed to remain competitive; the union argued they would alter contracts and reduce earning capacity. The Court also recommended monitoring the new arrangements and reviewing them 12 months after implementation.
