In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that the worker operating an Arvor bag-making machine at Faulkner Packaging Limited be paid above the £195 weekly maximum. The parties were to meet to agree the salary; if they could not agree within four weeks, the Court could recommend a rate on request. The recommendation was dated 11 December 1998. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a differential for the worker, saying her duties warranted extra pay. The company argued she was not a setter-operator and that engineers handled machine settings and major running problems. The Court found she operated the machine day to day and that the post merited pay above the maximum.
