Labour Court recommends RTE address bullying procedure failures after worker’s allegations

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

Labour Court ·

In 1999, the Labour Court recommended that RTE acknowledge problems with disciplinary hearings and remove critical letters and reports connected with the dispute from five workers’ personnel files. The recommendation was signed on 10 May 1999. A worker alleged bullying and harassment by colleagues and said management had failed to act. RTE said it had tried to investigate but that the worker and union had not cooperated with its procedures. The Court found that the disciplinary hearings had been handled unsatisfactorily and that communication failures contributed to the dispute. It also found RTE lacked a satisfactory procedure for bullying and harassment allegations and that management had been slow to respond. The recommendation addressed procedural failures and did not find that the alleged bullying or harassment had occurred. It called for a professional to communicate the new policy to employees, train supervisors and managers, and assess supervisors’ people-management training needs.
