In 1999, the Labour Court recommended that Woodfab Timber Ltd pay statutory redundancy plus £300 per year of service to workers facing redundancies. The company, based in Aughrim, Co. Wicklow, said it could not afford payments above statutory redundancy; the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a better redundancy package for its members, arguing statutory redundancy was inadequate. The Court said the redundancies would mostly be compulsory and resulted from capital reinvestment rather than a business downturn. It said the development project should have included provision for payments to those being made redundant, given their length of service.
