Labour Court urges union to re-engage with Dublin City Council on refuse service

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court recommended that the Irish Municipal, Public and Civil Trade Union re-engage with Dublin City Council over its decision to end domestic refuse collection and redeploy affected staff. The Court found that the council had complied with the Public Service Agreement in reviewing the service and consulting the unions. The council said continued refuse collection was no longer viable after an independent review. The union argued the decision was premature and could threaten jobs even after redeployment. The Court said the council had invited union input and offered consultation on implementation, and urged the union to present any compelling alternative while addressing the practical consequences of the decision. The recommendation was signed on 9 December 2011.
