Labour Court rejects IFUT claim for extra UCC redundancy payment

By Orla Quinn

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court did not recommend conceding IFUT’s claim for an additional ex-gratia redundancy payment for a worker at UCC. Its recommendation was signed on 15 December 2011. The union argued that an earlier €20,000 award covered breaches of fixed-term work law, not redundancy, and said enhanced redundancy terms were standard in higher education. UCC argued that redundancy had already been taken into account in that compensation, which exceeded the statutory redundancy payment. The Court agreed that redundancy was a factor in setting the earlier award and found no case for additional compensation.
