The Labour Court recommended conceding nine Hodges Figgis retail assistants' pay claim from 1 September 2023, provided they agreed to adopt the arrangements applying to colleagues on Waterstones terms for Sunday work, public holidays and special events. Waterstones acquired the Hodges Figgis business in 1999, and it continues to trade under that brand. The recommendation was signed on 14 August 2023. The workers, represented by Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, sought a 12% increase matching rises received by colleagues on Waterstones contracts. The nine workers on legacy terms had reached the top of a 15-point pay scale and had not received those increases.
