The WRC recommended €500 compensation for a hotel worker whose dismissal it found unfair because the employer had used no fair procedure. The recommendation, dated 21 June 2023, also advised the hotel to review its disciplinary procedures. The worker said he had received no warnings and was dismissed for absences related to a bereavement and Covid. The hotel accepted it had not followed its normal disciplinary process, but cited a wider pattern of absences and a verbal warning. The adjudicator reduced the compensation recommendation because the worker had not disclosed relevant absences or the warning when presenting his case.
