Lidl wins Traveller Community discrimination complaint over receipt check

By Saoirse Doyle

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission found a complaint by Heleasha Mongan against Lidl Ireland was not well founded after a manager asked to check her receipt for nappies as she left a store. The decision was dated 12 July 2023.

Mongan said the check amounted to discrimination because she is a member of the Traveller Community. Lidl denied treating her less favourably and said the check followed a new till operator’s uncertainty about whether the nappies had been scanned.

The adjudication officer found no evidence that the receipt check was linked to Mongan’s Traveller Community membership and said she had not established a case from which discrimination could be inferred. The complaint failed.
