The Workplace Relations Commission found a public holiday pay complaint against Carlow County Council was not well founded, in a decision dated 3 August 2023. Seamus Mara, a sewerage water caretaker, sought pay equal to his normal daily hours for each public holiday or, alternatively, a minimum of four hours’ work. He worked two hours on each public holiday and was paid double time for those hours. The adjudication officer found that the council met Mara’s statutory entitlement by granting him a day’s pay in lieu of each public holiday. Mara did not contest that payment, and the complaint was found not well founded.
