WRC orders letting agent to pay €8,500 for HAP discrimination

By Aoife Loughran

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission ordered letting agent Abbey Capel Pari to pay Rebecca Kiernan €8,500 compensation after finding she was discriminated against on the housing assistance ground.

In a decision dated 5 June 2024, the adjudication officer found the agent provided an accommodation-related service and that Kiernan’s evidence that the apartment was no longer available after she explained HAP payment rules was supported by written material. The respondent did not attend the hearing, though it had denied discrimination in an email and said tenancy decisions belonged to the landlord. The officer said Kiernan’s account of the stress and housing impact informed the compensation award.
