The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found Dentaltech Group unfairly dismissed Trevor Hunt after he was selected for redundancy without evidence of a selection method. It directed the company to pay him €8,076, equivalent to three months’ salary. The decision, dated 12 June 2024, said Hunt’s dismissal was undisputed, so the company had to show both a lawful reason and a fair process. Hunt argued that his role still existed because its work was transferred to a manager. The company said financial difficulties led it to remove the role and that Hunt could apply for a Business Development position. The WRC found no evidence explaining how Hunt had been chosen for redundancy and noted that the company had not drawn up a selection matrix. It chose compensation because Hunt had secured other work, taking his employment and losses into account.
