The WRC recommended that an employer pay a worker €1,500 after finding it unreasonable to refuse his late application for an internal promotion competition. The recommendation was dated 14 May 2024. The worker was on annual leave when applications opened and the deadline passed. He contacted HR on his first day back, before interviews had taken place. The officer said the employer could have shown flexibility given his 24 years’ service and the circumstances. The officer did not recommend giving him the promotion’s pay scale, as appointment depended on eligibility and successful assessment.
