The Labour Court recommended that the Central Bank amend its offer to provide a £1,000 lump sum for each currency assistant affected by planned mechanisation of note processing. It recommended that the amended offer be accepted and that cooperation with the changes begin without delay. The recommendation was signed on 13 June 1989. The Manufacturing Science And Finance union sought higher pay, arguing that mechanisation would alter duties and increase responsibilities. The Bank said the assistants' workload would fall. The Court found no reasonable basis for increasing basic pay but recognised the change's impact on the group's jobs.
