In 2000, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner's recommendation in a dispute between the Eastern Health Board and the Irish National Painters & Decorators Trade Group over acting-up arrangements for a chargehand. The decision was issued on 2 August 2000. The union appealed after the Board introduced a computerised maintenance system and three supervisory posts at Cherry Orchard Engineering Base. The union said there had been no agreement to end chargehand arrangements; the Board said the new structure replaced them. The Court upheld the recommendation on the narrower issue, allowing the most senior remaining painter to act up until the chargehand retired.
